How to play Scopa

Scopa — play the classic Italian card game online free

Scopa is one of Italy's best-loved card games, played with the same 40-card deck as briscola. Instead of tricks, you capture: play a card and take the table cards that match it or add up to it. Clear the whole table and that's a scopa — a point on the spot. Play scopa online free against the AI, right in your browser.

Scopa rules in short

Each player gets three cards and four go face up on the table. On your turn you play one card. If a table card has the same value you must take it; otherwise you may take any group of cards that adds up to your card's value. A single matching card always beats a sum. If nothing matches, your card stays on the table.

Card values: Ace 1, 2 to 7 at face value, Jack 8, Knight 9, King 10. When both hands are empty, three more cards each are dealt until the deck runs out. At the end of the hand, any cards left on the table go to whoever captured last.

Scoring

Every scopa (table sweep) is a point — except on the very last play of the hand. After each hand there's one point each for most cards, most coins (dinari), the settebello (the 7 of coins) and the primiera, the best card of each suit with sevens worth the most. Ties score for nobody. The first to 11 wins; you can also play to 21 or 31.
